To Visit Alvito

Alvito is a Village of the District of Beja, Region of the Alentejo. With an area of 260 Km2 and 2708 people (2004), constituted of two clienteles:
Alvito with an area of 136 km2 and 1630 people
Vila Nova de Baronia with 124 km2 and 1328 people, long ago with the name of Vila Nova Alvito and that it was headquarters of Concelho up to 1836.
The Climate of this zone is Mediterranean expressing itself low and concentrated precipitations in the Winter, high average temperature, with raised thermal amplitude, moistness relatively low and insolation and radiations raised in the summer.
Historical summary of the Alvito
T Humanhe presence being in concelho retraces to the neolithic period, existing vestiges that assure the presence of the man during the Age of Cobre, Bronze and the Iron.

Conquered for the Portuguese in 1234, in 1251 the population is donated the D. Estêvão Anes, Chancellor of the kingdom, for D. Alfonso III and for the Eyelashes of Évora. From this date, over all through the share of the Chancellor, it is proceeded its repovoamento, having passed Alvito to be a population with considerable dimensions for the time.
In 1279 D dies. Estêvão Anes, being the village in will for the Order of the Santíssima Trindade, which grants charter letter to it, identical to the one of Santarém, the 1 of August of 1280. Such charter one would come to be confirmed by D. Dinis in 1283. In 1387, D. João I donates to Alvito the D. Diogo Lobo, in exchange for the good services given in the battle of Aljubarrota (1385) and in the conquest of Évora to the Spaniard (1387), being on village to the history of this family throughout all the period that lasted the monarchic regimen.
The 24 of April of 1475, D. Alfonso V grants to the Dr. João Fernandes of the Silveira, husband of D. Maria de Sousa Lobo, the heading of Baron, passing Alvito to be the “head” of the first barony instituted in Portugal. At this time already the population enjoyed of an accented growth, fruit of the favorable conjuncture where the kingdom if found and that it all allowed a strong population growth in the Country.
At the time of transistion of the Séc. XVIII for the Séc. XIX, the growth and prosperity of Alvito estagnam, starting its decline from middle of the Séc. XX, over all during the decades of 60 and 80.
Although this, this locality still patents the wealth of long ago, disclosed through the beauty of its monuments and the grandiosidade of its history.
