Visit Vila Nova de Gaia

Vila Nova de Gaia is a municipality in the district of Porto.
With 168.7 km ² is the largest municipality of Porto. Subdivided into 24 parishes (Arcozelo, Avintes Canelas, Canidelo, Crestuma, Grijó, Gulpilhares, Lever Madalena Mafamude, Olives, Oliveira do Douro Pedroso, Perosinho, Sandim, Santa Marinha, São Félix da Marinha, São Pedro da Afurada, Seixezelo, Sermonde, Serzedo, Valadares, Vilar de Swallow, Vilar do Paraiso), is limited to the northern city of Porto, Gondomar to the northeast, south of Santa Maria da Feira and Thorn and west by ocean Atlântico.Em terms aquifers for Apart from striking Atlantic coast and river area of the Douro, numerous rivers cross the county. Brief Historical Summary

The origin of Vila Nova de Gaia probably dates back to a Celtic castro. During the Roman Empire, took the name or Cale Gale. This name is most likely of Celtic origin, a development of "Gall," with which the Celts referred to themselves (other examples can be found in "Galicia", "Gaul", "Galway"). After the conquest and pacification of the territories south of the Douro, around 1035, with the exodus and expulsion of Muslim populations, leaving fertile land abandoned, the settlers established themselves again in Gaia, in exchange for better contracts feudal, with the new lords of the conquered lands. This new population refounded the ancient city of Cale with the name of Gaia and around the castle ruins of the old "Gaia. "
After the founding of the kingdom of Portugal, the two villages of Vila Nova Gaia and remained autonomous. Gaia received a letter from charter passed by the King Afonso III in 1255 and Vila Nova, D. Denis in 1928. In 1383 both were included in the trial of Porto, losing their autonomy. At the end of liberal wars, Vila Nova Gaia, and were finally blessed with political autonomy, and was born by merging the current municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, on June 20, 1834.
